Big Conversation
Our Big Conversation continues, exploring who God wants us to be and what he wants us to be doing in this 21st century. In the past couple of months, our Mission Cluster Groups have been meeting to discuss five specific questions about their area of ministry. We will be sharing the feedback received so far, starting this week with the Business and Property Mission Cluster Group:
- Why do we do what we do with/in Business & Property administration?
- To ensure that the Corps is run on a sound financial basis.
- To ensure that business matters are dealt with effectively s as not to interfere with the spiritual and community activities of the Corps.
- To ensure that the Corps assets remain fit-for-purpose.
- To ensure compliance with the financial requirements of TSA and other agencies as appropriate.
- How do we do what we do with/in Business and Property administration?
- We follow TSA financial management procedures.
- We communicate with members as and when necessary.
- We ensure all income is promptly accounted for and banked.
- We ensure that expenses incurred by members in the course of Corps activities is promptly reimbursed.
- We oversee the stewardship of Corps resources.
- When are we successful in Business & Property administration?
- We believe we are successful when the business and property activities are undertaken without any hindrance to the Corps worship and community activities.
- What are we ultimately supposed to be doing in the 21st century in Business & Property administration?
- Support the worship and community activities of the Corps so that they continue and flourish without any hindrance from the administrative necessities.
- Ensure that the Corps continues to be compliant with TSA and other regulatory requirements.
- Adopt new technology to improve efficiency and reduce administration costs.
- Do these match with what we do now in Business & Property administration?
- We consider that the current business activities are in good alignment with our aspirations going forward.

Captain’s Log
Seeking the Holy Spirit in Times of Crisis
In these challenging times, our nation has recently faced an energy crisis that has seeped into the fabric of our daily lives. The government had to step in and cap energy price increases and help all of us pay our energy bills.
Many of us have faced or are facing our own personal crises too, which also sap our physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual energy. Yet, it is in these moments of darkness that the brightest light can emerge. Today is Pentecost Sunday, an opportunity to explore the deep connections between our physical needs and our spiritual journey.
A Parallel Journey
As we witnessed the strain on our energy supplies and the impact on our homes and industries, we are reminded of the spiritual power crises that can occur when we drift from God. Just as our physical world requires a sustainable source of energy, so too do our souls require the divine energy of the Holy Spirit to thrive.
From Scripture to Daily Life
The story of Pentecost is one where the Holy Spirit empowered the disciples in remarkable ways. It has many parallels to our present situation, and I invite you to spend a few moments reflecting on your own spiritual condition. Are you experiencing a power crisis within? Or are you fully charged by the divine presence?
The Power of Example
At its best, The Salvation Army has an unwavering commitment to love and service. Our dedication to duty is underpinned by our steadfast faith. Today reminds us that through the Holy Spirit, we too can lead lives of purpose and service.
Embrace the Transformative Power
As we gather this Sunday under the leadership of our divisional leaders, Majors Mike and Lisa Lloyd-Jones, let us be open to the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. Let us embrace the potential for renewal, even amidst the challenges we face. This is a call to each of us to connect with the divine, to rekindle our spiritual vigour, and to energise our faith.
This week, I encourage you to take a moment each day to seek the presence of the Holy Spirit. Whether through prayer, scripture, or quiet reflection, invite the Spirit to fill you anew, that you might live a life of love, service, and spiritual abundance.
We pray for Mike and Lisa, for the preparations they have made for our worship, and for their lives of ongoing purpose and service.

SUNDAY 19 May – SABBATH PRAYER
Pentecost
Today Pentecost is often called the birthday of the Church. With great joy we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit who filled the disciples with power and boldness to declare the gospel of Jesus Christ. God, we recognise on this day that you keep your promises to your people! May the flame of your Holy Spirit be kindled in our lives today.
(Lieut-Colonel Jayne Roberts, Secretary for Spiritual Life Development)
MONDAY 20 May – SHARING THE GOOD NEWS
Central, Southern and Channel Islands Division
One of our key initiatives as a division is to help local mission flourish by developing and investing in godly, spiritual, capable leaders. Pray for us as we partner with God in discovering how best to implement this initiative. Pray particularly for corps leaders in the process of changing appointments and ministries, and for corps who will have a change of leader this summer.
(Major Mike Lloyd-Jones, Divisional Commander)
TUESDAY 21 May – SERVING AND CARING
Yorkshire and Humber Division
The Yorkshire and Humber Division continues to reimagine its structure. The current reality is that a third of its corps are without officer leadership and rely heavily on the willingness and availability of leaders in other roles to help them cover meetings and other activities. Some of these leaders are travelling many miles to support these places. One of our strategies is to release people to work to their strengths across multiple corps, which enables local expressions to maximise their opportunities for ministry. Pray for continued vision, wisdom and discernment for all involved in sharing the good news across our division.
(Major Alec Still, Assistant Divisional Commander)
WEDNESDAY 22 May – GROWING IN FAITH
William Booth College Graduation Day
We give thanks for all those who are undertaking study at William Booth College, particularly today, on this day of celebration for those who have completed diplomas and degree courses. We pray that they will know the joy of a job well done, and that, in the midst of the relief and release, they will see the many ways in which God has worked in their lives throughout their period of study.
(Lyndall Bywater, UKI Boiler Room Team)
THURSDAY 23 May – INTERNATIONAL SALVATION ARMY
Rwanda and Burundi Territory
Pray for Territorial Leaders Lieut-Colonel Jean Laurore Clenat, Territorial Commander; Lieut-Colonel Elianise Clenat, Territorial President for Women’s Ministries; Major Emmanuel Ndagijimana, Chief Secretary; Major Dancille Ndagijimana, Territorial Secretary for Women’s Ministries.
The Army’s work in Rwanda began in the thick of the civil war, 30 years ago. As Salvationists do the work of sowing love, joy and peace in Rwanda and Burundi, may their hearts be filled with the joyful knowledge that God delights in them.
(Lyndall Bywater, UKI Boiler Room Team)
FRIDAY 24 May – JUSTICE AND RECONCILIATION
Wales 150:‘Dyma Gariad’
Pray for this milestone 150th year of The Salvation Army in Wales. Pray that each corps and centre around the nation will reach out to their community in a way that will best connect in their area, sharing the good news of the transforming power of Christ. This special year is a wonderful opportunity not just to gather internally but also to share ‘God’s story, our story and your story’ with communities in innovative ways, and to connect with other Christians in the community for joint outreach activities.
(Based on Salvationist interview with Captain Kathryn Stowers, Divisional Ecumenical Officer)
SATURDAY 25 May – CARE FOR CREATION
Partnering with others
‘As a member of The Climate Coalition, The Salvation Army is standing alongside over 130 organisations to call for climate action for the sake of all the things that matter most.’ (from The Salvation Army website)
With Care for Creation as one of our UKI Territory Mission Priorities, we give thanks that we don’t stand alone in such an important battle. Churches, charities, businesses and pressure groups are all working together to keep the need for climate action firmly on the political agenda. Pray that God will give us wisdom to know when, where and how to raise our collective voice, and that the Spirit will cause our message to be heard in high places.
(Lyndall Bywater, UKI Boiler Room Team)
Boiler Room – Powerhouse.
You are welcome to join us for our Boiler Room Prayer Meeting every Friday between 9:30am-10:00am in-person in the Prayer Room. I will be providing subjects each week for us to pray for, based on our mission and ministry and what is going on around us.
There is a Prayer Requests box on Reception (along with Prayer Request notepads) for use by corps members and hopefully, others who come into the Hall. We will pray those requests on a Friday morning too (unless they are marked Confidential for the CO only). Please do take advantage of this when it becomes available. We need to pray for each other! (as I know many of us do).
Do you have a prayer request? Please email us, use the prayer request box on our reception desk in The Hub, or speak to a member of the leadership team.
